Help! I Found Water in My Basement! What Should I Do Next?

We know how stressful it is to find water in your basement. Take a deep breath and complete the following steps.

Turn off the electricity.

Water and electricity don’t mix. If your circuit panel is in the basement, call the power company and have them turn off your electricity. Then, navigate with sunlight or battery-operated flashlights or flood lamps.

Rent a gasoline-powered water pump.

Of course, you can hire a company to help you rid your basement of water. But if you prefer to complete the process yourself, consider renting a gasoline-powered water pump with intake and outflow hoses. Gas-powered water pumps are set up outside and are easy to use.

Remove the wet and waterlogged items.

Unfortunately, you may have to throw away some of your waterlogged items if they are damaged beyond restoration. This may include your furniture and carpet or other flooring.

Use a wet-dry vacuum to pull up the remaining water.

When it is safe to turn on your electricity, rent, borrow, or purchase a wet-dry vacuum to clean up any remaining puddles.

Increase airflow.

Open the windows and use industrial fans to increase airflow to your space.

Use a dehumidifier.

Dehumidifiers help get moist air out of a space. You may have to run a hose from the dehumidifier to a basement drain or be prepared to empty the water collection container regularly.

Sterilize and deodorize the space.

Use chemicals and materials that inhibit the growth of mold and mildew. However, be careful! Read the warning labels and understand what personal protection equipment is required to use the product.
